DESTINATION
New York City
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will introduce students to the music and art of the most vibrant and exciting city in the world. NYC has the best museums, the best classical music, and the widest range of cultural opportunities in the world. To introduce students to these opportunities, we will attend 5 or 6 classical music concerts (Opera, symphony orchestra, chamber music) and will experience 6 or 7 museums (Metropolitan, Modern, Guggenheim, Frick, Tenement, Cloisters). We will spend about 7 days on campus studying the actual music we will hear so that students feel informed and prepared. We will talk about the museums and what sort of collection each presents. It’s important to learn how to attend a concert or visit a museum, since for some students this will be their first exposure to traditional Western culture . We’ll also learn how to get around the city and how to budget for meals, learning how to use the subway and buses. We will have an event nearly every day, but there will also be free time for shopping, shows, and sightseeing.
