The STEM Teaching and Research (STAR) Leadership Program is an outstanding opportunity for all Austin College students who take biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, mathematics and physics courses to learn leadership behaviors as they learn science. Our interdisciplinary program builds on the college’s strong reputation for leadership training and experiential learning both inside and outside the classroom.
Specifically, faculty members teach the skills of interpersonal effectiveness, problem solving, collaboration, foresight and planning, and ethical responsibility in their courses. Each of these behaviors alone does not create a leader; yet, together these behaviors allow students to grow and develop into people of influence with or without authority. Faculty members have enhanced courses by adding the intentional instruction of these leadership behaviors and by providing opportunities for students to apply and reflect on their effectiveness as leaders. All students enrolled in courses taught by STAR faculty receive this instruction integrated into the science content.
Just as it takes time to develop a scientist, it takes time to develop the skills necessary to be a leader. Students experience this intentional instruction of leadership behaviors in short, level-appropriate, activities in the instructional environment and are asked to practice those skills throughout their undergraduate career. Behaviors are built upon as students move through their courses. Students wishing to learn more may take advanced coursework and participate in research.
