Semester Study Abroad
Whether students opt to pay out of pocket or utilize financial aid to fund study abroad, Austin College expects that students who want to participate in semester study abroad apply for scholarships from external organizations as well as Austin College. The Pre-Departure Checklist asks students to submit a statement of purpose essay and updated resume to the Study Abroad Office to support this endeavor.
Another potential benefit to acquiring scholarships for study abroad, other than funding the experience, is that scholarship and grant awards can be listed on a resume or vitae and shows evidence of a resourceful potential employee!
Check with the Program Partner offering the program of study and experience. Partners such as Alliance, CIEE, IES, SIT, etc. offer scholarships related to their programs.
Austin College offers a number of endowed scholarships that are awarded by the Study Abroad Committee every semester. These scholarships are awarded based primarily on merit and plans for cultural engagement in the host country.

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. The Boren focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. national security, broadly defined, and underrepresented in study abroad.

“The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. About 100 scholarships are awarded each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad.”

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

January Term Travel Scholarships
The Killam Fellowships Program provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada. Students may participate in the program as a self-placed visiting student (registering at the host university and paying host tuition fees).
TALK is a Korean Government scholarship program knows as Teach and Learn in Korea. The program’s main objective is to invite and train native English teachers and overseas Koreans to teach practical English in after-school classes at the rural elementary school.
