Transfer Students

Austin College has a three-semester foreign language competency requirement that must be completed by every student before graduation.  Students are encouraged to complete this requirement as early in their studies as possible.  Students who plan to begin a new language do not need to take a placement exam in that language. Students who have taken a language in college and have transferred credit do NOT take the placement test. They will continue at the next appropriate level (102: second semester; 201: third semester; 202: fourth semester, etc.)  Students who have taken a language in high school but not in college should follow the instructions below in Option One or Option Two in order to register for a course in Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Japanese, Latin or Spanish this fall or next spring. There is no placement exam for Greek.  Students wishing to continue studying Greek may consult with Professor Bob Cape.

The language placement exam score is used only to determine at which level language class students should enroll . There is no need to study for a placement exam since its purpose is to determine the appropriate course for a student to take given his/her overall ability in the foreign language.

Remember:  No one can fail a placement exam!

OPTION ONE:

Students interested in French, German, or Spanish

  • Students who have NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE in a language or wish TO BEGIN A NEW LANGUAGE, different from the one that they have previously studied in high school, are not required to take a placement test. They simply register for level 101 in the language they wish to take.
  • Students who have taken ONE YEAR in any of the languages mentioned above should enter that same language at the 101 level.
  • Students who have taken TWO YEARS in any of the languages mentioned above should enter that same language at the 102 level.
  • Students who have taken THREE OR MORE YEARS in any of the languages mentioned above MUST take the placement test to be placed at the appropriate level. All the students who take the test and place at the 202 level or higher must consult the CML department to see if they have fulfilled Austin College’s Foreign Language Competency requirement and, if so, to learn of the options they have for continued study. •Note: If any change in level needs to be made, the student should talk to his/her language instructor.  The change will be at the instructor’s discretion, based on the student’s best interest.
