Majors: Spanish & Sociology
Director, Strategic Communications and Media Relations, ACLU – New Mexico
“My dual degrees from Austin College in Spanish and Sociology led to a career in non-profit communications because I was equipped with the ability to communicate in Spanish language media and break down complex ideas into accessible and compelling stories. I got my first break during a Lily Internship the summer after my junior year at AC, where I served as a bilingual spokesperson for the immigrant rights coalition No More Deaths, giving interviews to Mexican, American, and international media outlets. That experience opened up an opportunity to spend a year in Kenya post-graduation working as a communications officer for Church World Service, where I covered the refugee crisis resulting from the violent aftermath of Kenya’s disputed 2007 elections. That real-world experience in the communications field led to the ACLU position I’m at today.”
