Sculptor: John Van Alstine, 1986
“Solstice Calendar” was installed in front of Abell Library in April 1986 by John Van Alstine in celebration of the new library and to commemorate the Texas Sesquicentennial. The sculpture combines art and science, marking the solstice of each season with a shadow falling over metal bars that are a part of the sculpture. The sculpture is constructed of three pieces of Texas pink granite, selected in honor of the Sesquicentennial and because it has a wonderful light pink color, flecked with large pronounced crystals and mica, making it seem alive in reflected sunlight. It was dedicated by the Board of Trustees in recognition of the generous gift by Harriet A. and Heywood C. Clemons on November 6, 1986.
