Since Austin College’s founding in 1849, it has maintained its Presbyterian heritage. Reverend David Baker, educated at Hampden-Sydney College and Princeton University, led efforts for over a decade to create a college on the western frontier, establishing a Presbyterian presence.
Mindful of its historic roots, Austin College continues to provide a liberal arts education based on time-honored values and traditions. Today, the steeple of Wynne Chapel rises above campus treetops, a physical reminder of the covenant relationship between the College and Presbyterian Church (USA). At the same time, Wynne Chapel now serves the diverse group of people that make up the multi-faith Austin College community. The College creates many opportunities to foster spiritual development and student engagement in interfaith and intercultural dialogue and service.
