Professor of German
Classical & Modern Languages / Academic
- Caruth Administration 207A
A.B., Princeton University
Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin
I came to the college in 1979. For more than three decades I have worked in the German program, with other concurrent duties as opportunities presented themselves. During these years I taught beginning, intermediate and advanced German language and literature courses, courses in general and applied linguistics, and courses in the college’s Heritage Program.
I was able to direct the college’s first semester-long Language House in 1980 and the worked enthusiastically in the program for more than 25 years, directing the German House fifteen of those years.
An especially rewarding commitment was my 12 years (1993- 2001) working with AP German for the College Board and ETS, the last four years as Chief Reader and member of the test development committee. I was able to work with dynamic colleagues and learn much about test validity and the application of rubrics and holistic assessment.
A more oblique, but equally rewarding, dozen years (1989-2000) I spent as head coach of AC Men’s Soccer (without release time from German). I got to know students from a different perspective and cherish the friendships that developed with the players on those teams.
From 2002 to 2014 it was my privilege to direct the college’s January Term program. My contacts with colleagues across the disciplines taught me valuable lessons about the importance of intensive, engaged experiential learning in our liberal arts context. From 2007 to 2014 I directed the college’s study abroad program and learned still more of the value of international experiences for students.
