The Sherman Symphony Orchestra, directed by Austin College professor Daniel Dominick, is a crucial piece of the Austin College Music Department’s desire to provide the highest quality performing experiences for A.C. students. While the SSO is made up of professional musicians from north Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Oklahoma, there are a significant number of Austin College students – sometimes as many as two dozen – who perform alongside these area professionals. The Sherman Symphony performs the major symphonic literature from all eras and is open to qualified Austin College students by audition. There is no particular expectation that students will be music majors or upperclassmen, and the majority of students in the orchestra are majoring in something away from music.
The SSO 2016-17 schedule kicks off on October 22 with Brahms’ Piano Concerto #2 and includes Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in April 2017.
