The Center for Environmental Studies promotes multidisciplinary inquiry of environmental issues and problems through education, research and outreach programs. These programs are designed to increase scientific knowledge, expand community awareness, and foster greater appreciation for the interdependence of humans and other species.
The Center also serves as a catalyst for innovation in support of its educational, business and community constituencies.
Austin College Thinking Green serves as an umbrella for all campus greening initiatives, including the Thinking Green Campus Awareness student group. Learn more.
In 2001, Austin College initiated an ecosystem restoration project at a former family farm. The Clinton and Edith Sneed Environmental Research Area and Prairie Restoration site, named after the family who donated the 100 acre plot, contains nine experimental fields that receive a variety of treatments. The Austin College Center for Environmental Studies offers TEKS-aligned field trips to its Clinton and Edith Sneed Environmental Research Area and Prairie Restoration located approximately 10 miles west of Sherman. The field trips are generally for 4th and 5th grades, and are led by College students. Learn more!

On September 23rd, 2017, Dr. Peter Schulze gave a TEDx Talk entitled "We Aren't Going to Mars." The title is intentionally provocative. He argues that, though some people may someday go to Mars, we should not count on moving en masse to any other planet if we cause too much damage to this one. He then focuses on how we have been tricked into allowing damage to this planet.
