Social Justice Walking Tour Expand

The Social Justice Walking Tour was presented by Dr. Randi Tanglen’s English Students.

"A More Perfect Union" - 19th Century American Literature & Social Reform
During Dr. Tanglen's spring 2019 course, "American Literature to 1900," students explored the role of literature in some of the most debated social and political issues of the 1800s: the rights of women and of the American worker, slavery and abolition, Jim Crow segregation, and treatment of American Indians. From their study, students were inspired to design a campus tour to localize issues and highlight moments of historical inequality as well as sites of tolerance and progress. The tour brought to life the brave but now nearly-forgotten voices of writers who sought to expose injustice and seek a "more perfect union."
