Veterans OnwardTM*

A four-week experiential education program hosted by Austin College that empowers transitioning service members (TSMs) to address their personal, educational, and professional goals as they return to the American civilian community. The Veterans OnwardTM* program awards veterans with college credit, preparing them for matriculation in institutions of higher education. It also offers service and internship opportunities with local industries in Grayson County.

Veterans Onward

About this Four-Week Program

The partnership between Austin College and Veterans Onward combine the College’s student-centered, liberal arts-based approach with the Veterans Onward curriculum to prepare transitioning service members for civilian life and educational opportunities in institutions of higher education.

What is the program focus? Expand

The 4-week program offers a broad range of training sessions which address five key areas: Self-in-Context, Health, Education, Career, and Reintegration. The program serves the whole service member and introduces them to Austin College, where they can utilize veteran benefits for post-secondary education.

Who teaches the classes? Expand

Each program cohort is co-taught by two tenured, full-time college faculty members, many of whom have personal or family connections to military service. These faculty have been recruited from across humanities, social sciences, and sciences which cover the diversity of course offerings at Austin College. Consistent with its commitment to experiential education, the Austin College Veterans Onward program also offers community service and internship opportunities with local employers.

Program Funding & Benefits Expand

This program is funded through the Department of Defense. There are no out-of-pocket expenses for those participating in the program. Veterans who complete the program will be awarded 4 semester credit hours at Austin College.

About Veterans Onward

Veterans Onward empowers transitioning service members to address personal and professional needs as they move into the broader American civilian community.

Veterans Onward

How many transition each year? Expand

Approximately 200,000 service members transition to civilian communities annually, including 80,000 from the Army.

Support for transitioning? Expand

Veterans Onward provides a “soft-landing” for Veterans and their families. Studies indicate that 44% to 72% of soldiers experience high levels of stress during transition from military to civilian life. The Veterans Onward Protocol is an effective training program that prepares the service member for the transition process to the destination civilian community.

Why Austin College? Expand

Sitting 60 miles north of Dallas, the location of Austin College is well-suited to serve the veteran population. North Texas is home to Sheppard Air Force Base to our west, Red River Army Depot to the east, and Dyer Air Force Base, Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, and Fort Hood all to our south, and McAlester Army Ammunition Army Base, Fort Sill, and Altus Air Force Base to the north in southern Oklahoma.

Why Grayson County? Expand

With a low unemployment rate, a strong economy, and a low cost of living, Grayson County is an excellent location for Veterans to relocate after discharge.
