Description: Democracy is under stress across the world today. Let’s try to do something about it by making ourselves better democratic citizens. One way to do that is to think long and hard about the origins of democracy in ancient Greece. How did democracy work in ancient Athens? How did the comedies of Aristophanes both represent and shape Athenian democracy? What lessons do they offer us today? Texts will likely include *The Women in Parliament*, *Lysistrata*, *The Wasps*, *The Frogs*, *The Acharnians*, *The Birds*, and *The Clouds*, along with readings about democracy in general and in ancient Athens.
