Austin College students, faculty, and staff celebrated with friends and families of students as the Class of 2022 Commencement arrived for some 325 Bachelor of Arts degree candidates and 15 Master of Arts in Teaching degree candidates on Saturday, May 21. Seniors and faculty processed onto the Clyde L. Hall Commencement Court Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
Baccalaureate services had been held Friday evening at 7 p.m. in Wynne Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ted Wardlaw, president of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, bringing the sermon. Music, scripture, and prayers rounded out the service. Special guests at Baccalaureate included members of the Class of 1972, celebrating the 50th anniversary of their graduation, as well as members of the classes of 1970 and 1971, who were unable to meet for their regularly scheduled reunions due to COVID restrictions. Some 65 alumni from the three classes joined the Golden ’Roo Society Friday evening, receiving 50-year medallions from Austin College President Steven P. O’Day.
Dr. Wardlaw received an honorary doctorate during the Commencement ceremony, along with Chief Gary Batton, 47th chief of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Wardlaw received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree; Batton received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
Senior Speaker Sara Schuster, selected by her classmates, spoke of times shared during their college years but also talked of serious concerns. Having pointed out data on the disparity of pay to different groups, African-American women versus white men, for example, she went on. “As we leave this place, we all hope to achieve some form of wealth and more importantly, our own version of happiness, as well as become our version of success. But what we must acknowledge is that some of us have the privilege of starting one step up, without the boundary of bigotry staring us in the face,” she said. “I am not asking you to not acknowledge and enjoy the success that is coming to you through your hard work, but I do challenge you to use your privilege to help others, no matter the field you are entering. Sara went on to say that people must consider those who are different than them when making decisions. “So, I encourage you to use this astounding education we have all just received to do good and help others succeed with you. Remember, human rights should not be controversial, ignorance should not be encouraged, and equality should never be optional. We are each bright, capable, compassionate, and fun people. I am so excited to see how we all impact the world in each of our own ways. But please, make them fair and beneficial for all.”
President O’Day presented the Commencement Address. He told the members of the Class of 2022 that they had a story like no class before them, having faced a pandemic, learned new health protocols, and discovered new ways of getting around campus–social distancing, N95 masks, PCR testing, ZOOM, quarantine, isolation. Still, he told how students had successfully done research and presentations, Vivaldi and theatre, esports, Model UN, and more. “Now, as you look ahead to whatever the future may bring, be confident that you have been empowered by knowledge and steeled by adversity,” President O’Day said. “You are smart, resilient, and good to each other. You know how to think and how to solve. You know how to create, communicate, and learn! Equipped with all that, know that you are facing a new moment in history as you go out into the world.” The president took time to remind those present that going out into the world would not always be easy. “Want to be a teacher? A boss? A parent? There will be discomfort to deal with. Want to cure cancer? Transform the world? Give people hope? Make a difference? It isn’t always going to be easy. But you are the future we have been waiting for, a generation we are depending on. Let the discomfort you’re going to feel be the price of admission for making a difference in the world.”
“Remember, though,” O’Day continued, “You CAN do it! You have been prepared, here, by these people around you, through the belief that education can make our lives, our country, and our world better. And remember this, too: You faced down a pandemic. You can deal with the just-plain-hard things that come your way. You can do whatever it is you have set your mind to. You are ready. Press on with confidence. Think, create, solve. Lead, serve, love.”

The Graduates
As usual, a crowd of some 3,500 people gathered on the graduation court to hear the names of graduates called from the podium. From Kolbie Christopher Banks of Galveston, Texas, the first Master of Arts in Teaching degree recipient, to the final bachelor’s degree candidate, Kyle Charls Zhang of Plano, Texas, someone in the crowd was listening for each name, and applause and shouts of joy and pride were heard as the graduates shook hands with President O’Day, then moved on to be hooded—and returned to their seats as alumni. Those designated Summa Cum Laude earned a grade point average of 3.85 or higher on a 4.0 scale, Magna Cum Laude earned 3.70 to 3.84, and Cum Laude earned 3.5 to 3.69. Others completed the Departmental Honors Program and prepared and defended an Honors Thesis in a particular academic department. Some seniors have two or three majors or individually designed majors that allow directed study and specific exploration.
Dr. Elizabeth Gill, vice president for Academic Affairs also announced two special awards. “Each year, the faculty selects two outstanding scholars in the graduating class for special recognition by the Board of Trustees,” she said. “The awards are made, with no distinction between them, on the basis of the student’s entire academic record as reflected on the transcript, the balance in course distribution, cumulative grade point average, and credits earned. The two students become the recipients of the J.C. Kidd and J.M. Robinson Memorial Scholarship Medals. The Kidd medal is made possible through the generous gift of a Houston resident in memory of his friend J.C. Kidd and was first presented in 1940. The Robinson medal is given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Robinson of McKinney and was first presented in 1935. The Kidd Recipient for 2022 is Jack Harrison Hittson-Smith. The Robinson Recipient for 2022 is Olivia Leann Trusty.”
All who completed the requirements were granted their diplomas “with all the rights and privileges appertaining thereto,” as granted by Board of Trustees chair David Corrigan, also a 1981 graduate of the College. Before they knew it, the college seniors who arrived that morning were tossing their graduation caps skyward and maybe tearing up a bit as the A Cappella Choir sang “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” one last time just for them as the graduates of 2022 joined the alumni of the College.
