Austin College provides a reliable wireless network inside all buildings on the main campus. The wireless network is free for use by all faculty, staff, and students, but all devices used on the network must be registered (see below). Access for visitors requires a guest login; this should be requested through the Help Desk in advance for events or invited guests.
Wireless in the Flats and Village on Grand Ave. is provided by Sparklight, not IT. For issues with wireless in those locations, contact Sparklight directly or call the Student Life Office if you need help contacting them.
Prohibited wireless devices – Devices that interfere or conflict with the wireless network are not allowed. This includes personal wireless routers, WiFi hotspots, and other similar items. Ad Hoc wireless networks (device to device) are also not allowed.
Available Wireless Networks
Both encrypted and unencrypted wireless networks are provided on campus:
- The encrypted wireless network on campus is named AC_SECURE.
- The unencrypted wireless network on campus is named AC_VISITOR.
We recommend you use an encrypted network if available and your device supports it. The unencrypted networks are provided to support devices that have trouble connecting to the encrypted networks.
If you see a wireless network on campus other than the above, please report it to the help desk as it may come from a prohibited wireless device and may interfere with your wireless access.
Wireless Registration
All devices connected to the Austin College Wi-Fi need to be registered to work properly.
To register a device on the wireless network, connect to the AC_SECURE or AC_VISITOR wireless network anywhere on campus. Devices with a built-in web browser (phones, tablets, laptops) will open a web browser for you to use your AC credentials to register your device to your AC username. If you do not have a browser pop up, please open a browser and browse to a non-secure (http://) webpage. A good webpage to try is the Austin College Home Page.
On the registration page please click the check box next to “I accept the terms” and enter your network username (without domain – e.g. jsmith) and password. Click the login button to register the device. After registration, either disconnect from and reconnect to wireless or reboot your device to be able to access the Internet.
If your device does not have a web browser, such as a gaming console or media player, you can register the device yourself on the Device Registration page from on campus. Simply log in to the page and enter the MAC address when prompted. The MAC address will be in the format of XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX or XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX where each X is either 0-9 or A-F.
