Lindsay Zack – Astrochemistry
My students will be working on different aspects of microwave spectroscopy. The students will help design and build a microwave spectrometer that will be used for future projects. The desired outcome is to have the vacuum chamber working, electronics components tested, and some development done on control software for the system. The students may also be given some previous laboratory and/or astronomical data to analyze (time-permitting). The desired outcome for the laboratory data would be to gain insight into the bonding, structure, and properties of small molecules, such as KO and CH3NCS, for example. The outcome for the astronomical data set would be to further characterize the chemistry in different interstellar environments by comparing observational data with model predictions.
