Austin College seniors and their families are counting the days until graduation weekend, culminating with Commencement exercises for more than 270 Bachelor of Arts degree candidates in the Class of 2019 and 19 Master of Arts in Teaching degree candidates. The ceremony is Sunday, May 19, at 8:30 a.m. on the Clyde L. Hall Graduation Court on the north side of campus. Baccalaureate will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. in Wynne Chapel.
Austin College Commencement will be broadcast live via streaming video and on Facebook on Sunday morning, May 19. Live feed will be available online beginning at 8:15 through the entire ceremony. In case of rain at the time of the event, the ceremony moves to Sid Richardson Center inside Robert T. Mason Athletic/Recreation Complex, with simulcast viewing available in multiple locations for overflow seating. Online viewing will be available.
Each person in the crowd, which usually numbers close to 4,000, will watch for special, select faces as faculty, seniors, and other dignitaries process through Williams Founders Plaza onto the Clyde Hall Graduation Court and to the rows and rows of white seats waiting upon the green lawn. The procession is led by three bagpipers and College Marshal David Baker, professor of physics, carrying the official Austin College Mace. The College’s 1849 Founding Flag will be carried by Nan Davis, longtime vice president for Institutional Enrollment who will retire this summer, with the 1969 Class Flag representing the 50-year anniversary class carried by Susan DeLee Cuellar and Kathy Seddon, both of the Class of 1969; and the 2019 Class Flag carried by Senior Committee leaders Priya Chary, Benjamin Schmidt, and Saffire Uytico. Members of the Class of 1969 and other “Golden ’Roos” will have spent the weekend celebrating the 50-year anniversary class reunion and will have special seating and recognition during Commencement.
President Steven P. O’Day and Austin College Board of Trustees chair David Corrigan of Dallas oversee the conferring of degrees for students on behalf of the board as Beth Gill, vice president for Academic Affairs presenting the candidates. Corrigan, a 1981 graduate of the College, is president and CEO of Corrigan Investments, a commercial real estate development and investment firm in Dallas.
Before graduates cross the stage to receive their diplomas from President O’Day, they and others in the audience will hear from two speakers and watch as O’Day and Gill recognize several individuals for special honors.
Clarissa Cabellero Pinedo, Class of 2019 and elected by her classmates, will present the Senior Address. Completing a major in Psychology and minors in Education and Spanish, the Dallas senior served as student body president in 2018 and has been a leader in many campus activities and organizations, including the Catholic Students Association, Omega Zeta Sorority, a Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow ambassador, an intern for the Office of Public Affairs, and a member of the Senior Committee. She also has worked as a Resident Assistant and traveled to Zambia as a Global Outreach Fellow. Working to complete a Master of Arts in Teaching degree through Austin College’s Austin Teacher Program, she will work fulltime as a Spanish teacher at Centennial High School in Frisco this fall to complete her degree in May 2020.
The Commencement Address will be presented by Ruth Whiteside, an Austin College Class of 1964 graduate who retired in 2013 from the U.S. State Department, following a 35-year career serving under 12 Secretaries of State. Her State Department assignments, first in the Foreign Service and then in the Senior Executive Service, include service in Spain, the Policy Planning Staff, the Bureau of European Affairs, the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, and Executive Assistant to the Department’s Under Secretary of State for Management. From 2001 to 2006, she served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of the Director General, Bureau of Human Resources. Whiteside served Director of the Foreign Service Institute from 2006 until her retirement. Directors of the Foreign Service Institute are designated by the Secretary of State and hold rank equivalent to an Assistant Secretary of State. Whiteside will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Austin College.
Rev. Dr. John Wurster, pastor of St. Philip Presbyterian Church in Houston since 2012, will present the Saturday evening Baccalaureate sermon, “Named and Known.” Wurster, who will receive an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree during Commencement exercises Sunday, was ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1991. He also served congregations in Philadelphia, northwest Ohio, and Kerrville, Texas. He grew up in Wichita Falls, Texas, and earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude from Trinity University, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and the Doctor of Ministry degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
And, finally, the moment of the agenda graduates got up early for: the conferring of degrees, first the Master of Arts in Teaching degrees, then the Bachelor of Arts degrees. Then come words of welcome to the new alumni from Austin College Alumni Board president Cynthia Heyn, Class of 1985, of behalf of the full Alumni Association. The new graduates will hear a few closing remarks from President O’Day as he sends them out into the world
Other participants in the ceremony include 2019 student body president Hunter Williams ’21; Rev. P. Alex Thornburg, pastor of Heartland Presbyterian Church in Clive, Iowa, who will offer the invocation; Austin College chaplain John Williams ’84, who will offer the benediction; and members of the College’s A Cappella Choir, led by Dr. Wayne Crannell.
Members of the Class of 1969 will be on campus throughout the weekend to celebrate their 50-year graduation anniversary. During the weekend, the alumni will receive medallions and certificates from President O’Day as they officially become “Golden ’Roos” in celebration of the 50-year reunion. The 50-year class will lead the procession into Baccalaureate Saturday and be recognized at Commencement. All previously honored Golden ’Roos also are welcome to take part in the weekend’s reunion activities.
