COURSE DESCRIPTION
South Korea is a mountainous country with beautiful coastal regions and a rich culture influenced by early Confucianism practices that emanate modern Korea today. Sociocultural practices include promoting group harmony, respecting and honoring elders (filial piety), valuing family and friends, and holding beliefs of sincerity and loyalty. We will experience these sociocultural influences through exploration of the history and traditional and modern culture of South Korea by starting in Seoul, the capital and largest city in the country. Seoul includes a mix of historical and modern life, and we will visit the palaces of the early dynasties and learn about where and how the Korean alphabet (Hangul) was created. While in Seoul, we will explore and visit the K-pop and K-drama entertainment industries. During the trip, students will travel to the coastal city Busan and visit Buddhist temples. Throughout travel to these destinations, students will experience South Korea’s customs, food, diverse geography, and traditional and contemporary art. Students will reflect on their cultural experiences as it relates and differs to their personal cultural beliefs, practices, and values.
