COURSE DESCRIPTION
This Spanish immersion course is a tour de force of the history and culture of the central highlands of Mexico. From the ancient ruins of Tenochtitlan, Teotihuacan, Cholula, Cacaxtla, to the ancient, colonial, and modern cities of Mexico City, Puebla, Tlaxcala, and Queretaro to the picturesque towns of Bernal, Xilitla, and Tequisquiapan; we will see it all! Our travels include visits to cultural sites, museums, Community Centers and NGOs. Specific sites include: El Z6calo, Templo Mayor, Museum of Anthropology, Castillo de Chapultepec, and the Frida Kahlo museum in Mexico City as well as the Center for Emerging Urban Art and an Indigenous Arts Cooperative in Queretaro. We will also visit Puebla, Tlaxcala, Teotihuacan pyramids, and the surreal tropical gardens of Xilitla where students can take in adventurous activities like hiking, swimming, and ziplining. Students will be immersed in Spanish language, history, art, architecture, and culture on the plaza, at the market, in museums and at other sites around town. AC students will experience Mexican culture while at the meet ups with local university students and in homestays. Far from the border and the beach, this is the beautiful historic and cultural center of Mexico that fewer US Americans get to experience. See the richness of this “heartland.” Airfare, hotel, homestays, and most meals included in the price. SPAN 201 or equivalent, or instructor permission, required.
