The Veterans Onward^TM* program at Austin College empowers transitioning service members (TSMs) to address their personal, educational, and professional goals as they return to the American civilian community. This program pairs tailored academic degree programs with local internship opportunities to help students develop an action plan centering on future employment in Grayson County.

	What does the program include?
	Before matriculation, Veterans Onward at Austin College has service members participate in an internship program which offers civilian work experience through industry training. Afterwards, service members enroll full-time at Austin College where they develop an educational and vocational action plan with their faculty mentor that focuses on future employment opportunities.
	Who teaches the classes?
	Students in the program will take a First Year Seminar (FYS) course taught by faculty who will serve as mentors to the students in the program. In this course, students will learn academic reading, writing, and research skills needed to foster future successes at the college. Upon completion of this course, students will have access to the wide variety of courses taught at Austin College by faculty whose specializations encompass the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Consistent with its commitment to experiential education, the Austin College Veterans Onward program also offers community service and internship opportunities with local employers.

The primary goal of Veterans Onward is to empower transitioning service members (TSMs) to successfully address their personal and professional needs during the transition process back into the broader American civilian community. Veterans Onward assists the TSM in achieving a “soft-landing” for Veterans and their families. Reducing transition stress can reduce the risk of Veteran suicide.

	How Many TSM's are there each year?
	Approximately 200,000 service members transition to civilian communities annually, including 80,000 from the Army.
	Support for TSM's
	Veterans Onward provides a “soft-landing” for Veterans and their families. Studies indicate that 44% to 72% of soldiers experience high levels of stress during transition from military to civilian life. The Veterans Onward Protocol is an effective training program that prepares the service member for the transition process to the destination civilian community.

 

2024-2025 Program
