“There’s nothing more stifling than reading a comic book written by someone who’s only ever read comic books. Early in my career, I worked as a proofreader, everything from financial documents to science journals, but what I carried with me the whole time were the tools I gained at Austin College.

At Austin College, I was exposed to literature I’d never encountered before and challenged by courses in psychology and philosophy. I left with a rich, versatile toolkit that I didn’t immediately know how to use. But as the saying goes, luck is when preparation meets opportunity. When creative writing opportunities came along, I was ready. Austin College had shown me a much wider world than I’d known before.

The experience gave me the strength to go the distance. I learned perseverance and the importance of holding myself to high standards. If I didn’t show up or do the work, it counted against me, and that accountability shaped how I approached my career. In a competitive world, Austin College taught me not to settle for anything less than my best."
