I serve on the board of a small non-profit, Coins for Change, that partners with the Maasai People of Amboseli, Kenya. Through this organization, I have traveled to Kenya multiple times, collaborating with the Maasai to improve living conditions in their villages by creating self-sustaining opportunities. Being a part of Coins for Change for the past 10 years has been a privilege that I am forever grateful. It continues to fill my soul with love & happiness as my connection to people in Kenya deepen.
During my time at Austin College, the call to be of service felt ingrained into all aspects of the community. Through the different organizations I was involved in (Service Station, Student Development Board, Alpha Delta Chi, or the ACtivators) service was central and connected us to the community. Whether it was giving campus tours, making outbound calls to prospective students or prairie preservation with my sorority, time spent in service to others equated to deeper bonds and overall joy within these groups. Without realizing it, I gained the skills to recognize need and know where and how I can help. AC also instilled in me a love for other cultures and travel through study abroad and Jan Term. I chose Spanish as my major because I wanted to be able to communicate with the people I met abroad and connect on a meaningful level. This led to a lifelong love and interest in different countries and cultures, opening my heart to new perspectives in the world. I feel so fortunate that I attended Austin College – it changed my life beyond measure and for that I am eternally grateful.
