Climate ambassadors 2023

Austin College received official observer status as a research or educational institution at the UN Climate Conference in 2023, following a 10-month application process.

Austin College students have the opportunity to apply as ambassadors for the Austin College delegation. The Austin College Climate Ambassador program is open to any major. Students will be selected through a rigorous application and interview process.

Selected students participate in a fall-term seminar course to explore climate science, policy, and outreach. They choose an area of focus to explore during the days they participate at the annual UN Climate Conference. Research topics may include innovation and technology, public health, finance, nature-based solutions, climate justice, food, water, or climate change adaptation.

Experiencing the climate conference in person fits with Austin College’s mission for global learning and service. At the conference, nations come together to act toward achieving the world’s collective climate goals as prescribed under the 2015 Paris Agreement. The Austin College Delegation has access to the “Blue Zone” sessions, where heads of state and environmental ministers negotiate policy concerning various climate issues. Students can engage through the “Green Zone” where lobbyists, activists, and exhibitors pitched their interests.

Austin College Climate Ambassadors have attended the United Nations Climate Conferences in Dubai (COP28) and in Azerbaijan (COP29). The 2025 conference (COP30) will be held in Brazil.
