The Japanese language curriculum at Austin College is built around the Genki textbooks (published by The Japan Times) for the beginning and intermediate level courses, supplemented with authentic materials, both written texts and film, for more advanced learners.

The Japanese curriculum foregrounds speaking and listening skills, and cultivates reading and writing skills through a combination of computer input and calligraphic practice. Students will learn about unique facets of Japanese social interaction and cultural concerns that will aid them in utilizing their new language skills with appropriate nuance. Students in advanced courses have the opportunity to read short stories, essays, and poetry by contemporary authors in the original Japanese and to refine writing skills through essay and haiku assignments. EAS faculty also find opportunities every academic year to gather Japanese language learners together to experience and enjoy cultural activities including preparing Japanese meals or to try out traditional arts such as origami or calligraphy.
