Protect your bicycle.
Always lock your bicycle to a bicycle rack. Use a heavy lock. Do not trust an expensive bicycle to a cheap lock or chain.
Some brands of locks such as KRYPTONITE will even insure your bicycle against theft if their lock is properly used.
Be observant of strangers hanging around the Bicycle Racks on campus and report them to Campus Police. Register you bicycle with Campus Police. This is an excellent way to have your bicycle information kept on file for identification purposes.

Austin College Bicycle Information
SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION
With the concerns about the environment and rising costs of vehicle ownership and insurance, many people are choosing bicycles as their primary mode of transportation, as well as a form of recreation. Bicycles serve college students very well, and are growing in popularity on college campuses. The purpose of this pamphlet is to provide information to bicycle owners, so that their college bicycling experience will be a safe and enjoyable one.
- Students, Faculty and Staff are urged to register their bicycles with the Campus Police Department. There is no charge for this service, and it serves as an excellent identification tool if the bicycle is stolen or if ownership is questioned.
- Austin College will make every effort possible to provide protection to bicycles, but CANNOT assume responsibility for any loss or damage.
- Because safety is also a concern, everyone must adhere to policies regarding the safe use of bicycles on the campus.
SECTION II: BICYCLE RULES AND REGULATIONS
- Bicycles may only be parked in bicycle racks or in areas approved by the Campus Police Chief.
- Bicycles are not to be used in such a manner as to pose a threat or danger to pedestrians.
- Bicycles may not be locked or secured to permanent fixtures such as light poles, banisters, hand rails, fences or trees.
- Bicycles in unsafe areas or those areas listed above are subject to being removed at the owner’s expense.
- Bicycles are not allowed on the track at Apple Stadium.
- Because of Fire Codes, bicycles will not be stored in residence halls or academic buildings unless approved by the Campus Police Chief or Building Director.
- Bicycles are subject to being issued citations for violations.
SECTION III: SCHOOL BREAK INFORMATION
- During short breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break), Residence Hall Directors will usually allow bicycle storage in a specified interior location. Bikes left outside during shut down periods are prime targets for thieves.
- Bicycles left on campus after the close of the Spring Semester are subject to being confiscated as abandoned property. Returning students should make arrangements to store their bicycles in an approved location prior to leaving for the summer.
SECTION IV: THEFT PREVENTION
- Keep your bicycle locked anytime it is not in use. An unsecured bicycle can be out of sight in a matter of seconds.
- Use a well made lock to secure the bicycle. Cheap combination locks can easily be cut or even beat into pieces with a stone or brick.
- Record all bicycle information for your personal records (see back). Proper identifying information is all a Police Department can use for identification purposes.
- Campus Police can provide an engraver should you decide to engrave your Student ID number or Drivers License number on your bike. If using DL#, specify the State issuing it.
- Report suspicious activity to Campus Police at X-2555 if you observe anyone who is paying particular attention to property such as cars or bicycles.
- Bicycles can be stored in residence halls during breaks (except summer). Your Area Coordinator will tell you where in your building to store your bicycle. It is your responsibility to see that your bicycle gets moved once you return.
SECTION V: OTHER INFORMATION
- Ride safely, using protective gear, especially when traveling on public roadways.
- Follow all rules of the road and make sure drivers know what your intentions are before making turns or lane changes.
- Don’t ride at night unless absolutely necessary. Then wear bright or reflective clothing.
