Faculty: Jeremy Posadas
Description: In this course, every day we’ll watch 1-2 films that portray a gay love story (plus a few lesbian and trans love stories). Then, each week, students will write brief reflection papers on several of week’s films or a related topic. Students will also need to watch at least one film each weekend outside of class. Some of the films we’ll watch are Brokeback Mountain, Moonlight, Tangerine, Beach Rats and God’s Own Country. We focus on relationships between men because our central concern is how these love stories in some ways reject dominant social rules about what it means to “be a man” but in other ways affirm those very rules. We’ll also reflect on what love involves and what makes a “good” love story. (Note: Twice a week we’ll meet for an hour longer than the usual time.) As part of Austin College’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic comments or actions will not be allowed in this course
