Austin College will host the Global Outreach Forum on February 17, honoring Women for Women International Founder and CEO Zainab Salbi. In addition to an on-campus convocation at 11 a.m. in Wynne Chapel open to all faculty, staff, and students as well as the Sherman community, two events will be held at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre in the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas.
Salbi, an international humanitarian known for transcending a life in Saddam Hussein’s inner circle and empowering more than a quarter-million women in war-torn countries to move beyond crisis to self-sufficiency, will speak to area high school and community groups at two Dallas events on February 17. The Global Outreach Forum includes:
3:30 p.m. – The GO! Student Experience: An interactive discussion featuring Salbi, Austin College students, and Dallas high school students and youth groups will detail ways North Texas youth can be thoughtful and effective community leaders. Students will be given information about setting up a letter-writing campaign to women served through Salbi’s organization.
7:30 p.m. – The Austin College 2011 Posey Leadership Award: The award promotes and recognizes service and leadership in a global context. Salbi will receive the award for her vision and commitment to the work of empowering socially excluded women in conflict and post-conflict situations. Salbi also will give a lecture on her work at the award presentation. Tickets are available for sale from $35 to $125 at www.attpac.org. All proceeds will support the study abroad program at Austin College.
