Seven Life-Changing Benefits of Studying Abroad
Imagine a single decision that can change your life's path and redefine your identity. Studying abroad is one such powerful choice. It's more than just an academic endeavor; it's an adventure that shapes your character, broadens your horizons, and leaves an indelible mark on your future.
The benefits of studying abroad extend beyond the classroom and endure long after returning home. Whether you're seeking personal growth or professional development, the study abroad journey offers unparalleled opportunities. Here are seven compelling reasons why taking the leap to study in a foreign country could be the most rewarding decision you'll ever make.
What are the benefits of studying abroad?
1. Explore the world
Living in another country isn't just about visiting—it's about immersing yourself completely in a new culture. You'll have the chance to explore not only your host country but also its neighboring regions. Imagine weekend getaways to London, Milan, or Madrid while studying in France. These experiences allow you to see the world from a whole new perspective.
2. Expand your viewpoint
By setting temporary roots in a foreign land, you'll gain an intimate understanding of its lifestyle and culture. This exposure to different customs, viewpoints, and traditions will significantly expand your own worldview, making you more adaptable and open-minded.
3. Focus on a new language
Ever wanted to become fluent in a language but struggled to find practice opportunities? Studying abroad places you right in the heart of linguistic action. Whether it's practicing Spanish in Barcelona or German in Berlin, immersion is the fastest way to achieve fluency. (Interested in learning a language closer to home? Spending a semester abroad is truly life-changing. From the moment you step on the plane and take-off on your journey until you safely return, you gain unforgettable experiences and a greater appreciation for the world around you. You become a student of your surroundings and a citizen of the world. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity I had to see a small part of the big world that is out there and to add the uniqueness of every individual I met, from Spain to Germany to Morocco, to my own story.Santos BotelloSpain
4. Develop confidence
Navigating a new city’s public transportation system, like Tokyo's subway, or managing daily life, while studying in South Korea, challenges you in ways that build lasting confidence. These everyday victories push you out of your comfort zone, leaving you with a newfound sense of self-assurance.
5. Boost your resume
Employers are always on the lookout for candidates who bring unique experiences to the table. Studying abroad signals resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace new challenges—qualities that can set you apart in a competitive job market. Many of our programs support internships, research, and/or volunteer work that further enhances your experiences and add to your resume.
My study abroad experience with the School for Field Studies in Tanzania was truly the experience of a lifetime. I had the unique opportunity to conduct directed research on tusk fractures in elephants— which, as I learned, are actually specialized teeth. This research deepened my understanding of dental anatomy in a completely new realm and opened the doors that later became my career.

6. Gain independence
Moving to a foreign country alone is perhaps the ultimate test of independence. From finding your way around a new campus to exploring a bustling city, each step you take reinforces your ability to thrive on your own, giving you a strong sense of accomplishment.
7. Forge lifelong connections
As much independence as you’ll gain, you will also meet incredible people along the way. Forming friendships with fellow students and professors enriches your experience and builds a network that can be invaluable for your future career and personal life.
