Austin College senior Jacob Hanes of Arlington, Texas, and the College’s Department of Music will present his Senior Recital on Friday, March 25, at 7 p.m. in Clifford J. Grum Sanctuary of Wynne Chapel on campus. Completing majors in music, economics, and business administration, Jacob is the son of James and Cara Hanes of Arlington, Texas.
A baritone, Hanes will perform the music of Strauss, Donizetti, Massenet, Spohr, Lully, and Bellini during his recital.
The Senior Recital is a requirement of completing a major in music, but performance is nothing new to Hanes. He began singing in junior high and was a Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State Mixed Choir member. He also presented an Austin College Junior Recital last spring.
Hanes has been a member of Austin College’s A Cappella Choir for four years and performed for two years as a member of the College’s “Sons of Pitches” men’s quartet.
When making a college choice, Hanes was being recruited to play football. He wanted to play football, but “I let coaches know that music is a non-negotiable for me. I knew that I needed a college where I would not ever be ‘just’ a football player,” he said.
He certainly is more than a football player at Austin College. “Being able to be involved in many activities and still be educated at a high level was the biggest draw of Austin College for me,” Hanes said. “In these four years, I have been a captain of the football team, performed in two operas and a musical, been on the executive council of Phi Sigma Alpha fraternity for three years, been a member of several clubs, and organized philanthropy and networking events. I also had the opportunity to be part of a great internship program in the metroplex where I used the skills I learned here to earn the accolade of #1 intern in DFW. I did all that while making memories and forming lifelong bonds.”
After graduation, Hanes plans to attend graduate school to earn a master’s degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. Then, he expects to have a private studio and perform actively.
