COURSE DESCRIPTION
Human history has ebbed and flowed over the region we now call Turkey, a country straddling the divide between Asia and Europe. This trip will be an exploration of the “layers” of history there. We will be staying in several locations, including Istanbul, Bodrum, the area of the ancient city of Ephesus, and some more remote areas (Pammukele in particular). The course will constitute an intensive study of world history, from early human settlements, to the Greeks and Romans, to the great Ottoman Empire, to the history of the Republic of Turkey in the last hundred years. In some places, like the site of ancient Troy, we will see literal layers exposed by archeologists. In some our layers will be more conceptual. All of them will serve to give modern students an idea of the vast variety of history in the region. We will meet the first week on campus.
