Before I began studying German at Austin College, I viewed language studies as a requirement to be filled. I had no idea how my studies would enable me to connect with people from other cultures. They led me to study abroad, working as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Germany, and now, teaching English in Korea. Even the smallest day to day interactions done in another language feel like a victory. As Americans, we are very privileged to have a passport that opens many doors, and to speak a language known by many. However, when you learn a language, you able to connect with people on their own terms, not as an American, not as a foreigner, but a person who values them and their culture.
