Mary Helen has deep Roo roots, following her father (’36) and older brother (’63) to AC. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and was active in the Student National Education Association, Collegiates, and Alpha Delta Chi. She was also on the homecoming court. Later, she earned a Master of Education at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Her career included working as an elementary teacher, special education teacher, educational diagnostician, counselor, and finally 30 years as a school psychologist. She is certified as a Licensed Professional Counselor as well. She incorporated her additional training as a play and art therapist into her counseling with children and adolescents.
Since retiring Mary Helen has resumed close ties with AC as co-editor of the class of ’66 bimonthly newsletter, and by assisting with mock interviews for AC students, attending most AC homecomings and graduations, and hosting and attending many Alumnights. She lives in the Hill Country near Fredericksburg with her two German Shepherds and enjoys many social and outdoor activities. She also serves on the Wildlife Committee and edits the newsletter for her homeowners’ association.
