Instructor: Adriana Alvarez
Description: This Spanish immersion course centers on Mexican and Salvadoran immigrant communities in North Texas. We will visit the Multicultural Family Center in Sherman as well as read and view works on the food, art, literature, and history of these communities. Much of this history has not been published, so we will meet with community leaders and families who have been in the area the longest, to hear them tell their story and talk about their culture. The course will also include visits to local immigrant restaurants and to Latino owned businesses and supermarkets to buy ingredients for a few dishes we will cook in the Jordan Language house kitchen. While cooking and eating we will converse exclusively in Spanish, giving students the chance to improve their conversation skills in a relaxed and natural setting. All discussions on readings, videos, and films will also be in Spanish.
