TEDxAustinCollege 2025: Odyssey

TEDxAustinCollege 2025: Odyssey logo with a ship and an "X" on its sail

Austin College will host the tenth annual TEDxAustinCollege Conference on Saturday, October 4, 2025, in Sally and Jim Nation Theatre and Learning Commons, inside Ida Green Communication Center.

An odyssey is often long and arduous, bringing about impactful changes that alter the course of lives. It is also, significantly, an expedition back home, a heroic return to the place that started this path. This journey brings changes in perspective, both for those left behind and those returning, leaving room for a new point of view. This new way of thinking can then be shared, launching another odyssey. In recognition of our tenth year of TEDxAustinCollege, our speaker curation team decided to bring back former TEDxAustinCollege  speakers who will share new information, perspectives, and experiences that they have gleaned while they have been away. How have their stances changed? Do they have a different outlook on life? What new knowledge have they gained?

Find out the answers to these questions and more at TEDxAustinCollege 2025: Odyssey.

Mackenzie Bolen, Ph.D. '21

Mack began pursuing her curiosity in research related to the brain as an undergraduate at Austin College. She conducted work in Dr. Renee Countryman’s lab, which evolved into an honors thesis and culminated in her 2020 TEDx talk on sports-related brain injuries. Mack then pursued a Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Florida (UF), where she defended her dissertation on biomarkers that exist outside of the brain as a consequence of neurodegenerative disease. In addition to her scholarly work, Mack regularly volunteered at the UF Neuromedicine Intensive Care Unit and served on the Intensive Critical Care Medical Artificial Intelligence board. After completing her Ph.D. training in May 2025, she was accepted as a Postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Neurology & Neurological Sciences at Stanford University. Now at Stanford, Mack is working on biomarkers that indicate neurodegenerative risk early in life, via the gut-brain axis.
