SHERMAN, TX—The Austin College Athletics Department and the Alumni “A” Athletics Association Board inducted honorees into the Austin College Athletics Hall of Honor on Saturday, July 27 at the annual Legends Weekend event.

Austin College Legends are nominated and selected based on their athletic record while playing for the ’Roos and for showing excellence in their community and profession.

This year, the college recognized para-athlete Cody Fletcher Dean ’24, a four-year member of the Austin College men’s swim team, as the recipient of the inaugural award in that category. Dean was recognized as the SCAC Character and Community Person in 2022, SCAC Honor Roll for two years, and on the All-Sportsmanship Team for two years. Among his many accomplishments on campus, Dean recently received the Oscar C. Page Servant of the Year Award. He will begin his studies at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine this fall.  

Other new members of the Hall of Honor include:

Andrea Bauer Coachman ’06 (MAT ’08) played basketball for four years and was recognized with East Division awards including Player of the Week, First Team, and Honorable Mention. She received team awards for Most Improved, The Hustle Award, and the Pat E. Hooks Award. Coachman worked as a teacher and coach for McKinney and Lovejoy school districts.

Mike Foster ’86, played football for four years and was named All Conference, NAIA All District 8, and NAIA All-America recipient. Just three years after graduating with a business administration degree, Foster founded BASA Resources in Addison, Texas. Today, BASA employs more than 200 people and is named a Top 50 private oil producer in the United States.

Al Hockaday ’76 (MAT ’77), played football and baseball for four years and worked as a graduate assistant to the baseball team. He was named Lineman of the Week twice and received the Cecil Gregg MVP Award in baseball. His career with Hockaday & Associates spans from 1977 through 2019. Al is a professional Santa and a respected sports official who has officiated more than 10,000 games in various sports since 1968.  

Lauren Wheeler Hutton ’16, swam with the ’Roos between 2012 and 2016 and is highly decorated as an All-SCAC athlete and Austin College record holder. She received the Hannah Award, Tim Jubela Award, Gene Day Award, and was the College’s NCAA Woman of the Year Nominee. She majored in biology and Spanish and completed her Bachelor of Science in nursing at OKC University. She works as a postpartum nurse in Fargo, North Dakota.

Ned Muñoz ’93 swam for four years with the Austin College ’Roos. He served as team captain and was a three-time National Championship qualifier. Muñoz was named All-America in the 1650 freestyle and was a two-time Hannah Award winner. He completed his law degree at The University of Texas in 1996 and has recently taken the position of president of the Texas Cable Association.

Wilson Renfroe ’80 played football and baseball all four years at Austin College. He was named NAIA All-District 8 punter and NAIA All-District place kicker and earned Honorable Mention All-America twice. Renfroe continued his education, ultimately completing a doctorate in psychology and has worked in that field since the late 80s.

The College also awarded the Coach Joe Spencer Award for Meritorious Service and Lifetime Achievement in Coaching to Marty Secord ’85. Secord coached football for 35 years at the high school and college levels. Today, he works with the faith-based organization, Coaches Outreach Ministry, to mentor coaches from many different sports.  Marty is well-known and highly regarded as the first head coach at Frisco Wakeland High School where he served from 2006 to his retirement in 2022. 

This year, more than 200 alumni, friends, and fans registered to attend the Legends Weekend events. In addition to the awards dinner and presentation, events included the annual ’Roos Reception in memory of Danny Gilstrap ’67, and the 41st Annual Slate McCord Golf Tournament. The golf tournament serves as a fundraiser for the College Athletics Department.
