Dr. Susan Farrell ’85 has been announced as the College of Charleston spring 2022 commencement speaker. After graduating from Austin College, Farrell went on to get her Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin and then began teaching at the College of Charleston in 1993. Farrell, who is a Professor of English at the College of Charleston, is also a founding member of the Kurt Vonnegut Society.

Greg Wise ’92 is to be a featured speaker at the Blinn College District on May 3. Wise will present as part of a Communication Studies Speaker Series that is open to both students and the public. He will be speaking on “Maximizing the Power of Your Voice,” which will include dictation exercises, posture instruction, and more.

Reed Heim ’00 has been named the new head coach and athletic coordinator at Guyer High School. Heim was previously the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Guyer. During his time there, he has already made a huge impact and hopes to continue that legacy in his new role.

Austin College alumnus Carroll Lamar “Bud” Pickett ’54 passed away on April 3, 2022. Pickett graduated from Austin College with a bachelor's degree in 1954 and has since been honored by the college with the Distinguished Alumnus award, an Honorary Doctorate, and an induction into the Athletic Hall of Honor.

Sherman ISD has named Dr. Tyson Bennett ’92 as the lone finalist for the new superintendent position Wednesday afternoon.  Bennett, who has 16 years with the district, most recently as assistant superintendent of finance and operations, will replace Dr. David Hicks who is moving to Northwest ISD in Fort Worth.

The Sherman Economic Development Corporation, along with partners including Austin College and the Grayson College Small Business Development Center, have once again offered the Raising Innovative Sherman Entrepreneurs (RISE) program, a competitive grant competition that offers development grants of up to $100,000 for new businesses who are bringing manufacturing to Sherman. Cary Wacker, Director of Community Engagement at Austin College, explained that after a few slow years during the pandemic, this year has seen a much-improved economic climate.

The Sherman Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Dominick, professor of music, presented the last concert of its 2021-2022 season on April 30 and featured work by the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. The SSO roster of over 80 musicians includes many Austin College students, faculty, and alumni.

The Austin College Posey Leadership Award was presented to honoree Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, neurosurgeon at the Mayo Clinic Florida. AC President Steven P. O’Day and AC board chair David Corrigan, a 1981 graduate, presented the award, recognizing Quiñones-Hinojosa for his work to improve the quality of health for others, advancing humanitarian health care, and spreading health around the world.

Darrah Dunn ’89 has been named the new Managing Artistic Director of the Sherman Community Players. Dunn has an academic history in theatre arts and to produce live theater is a dream of his. Dunn’s first show will be The Sound of Music, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. He is excited to take on this new role and help continue to build the program.

Austin College students performed the musical Assassins, music and lyrics by Sondheim and librettist John Weidman. This production was a joint effort between the Music and Theatre departments at Austin College. The show was directed by Dr. Kirk Andrew Everist, conducted by Dr. Ricky Duhaime, and Dr. Wayne Crannell was the vocal director. The cast included Chloe Bachofen ’22, Grant Garrison ’22, Olivia Trusty ’22, and others.

At the Texoma Earth Day Festival, the Austin College Entomology Club entertained and enlightened children. There were crafts, demonstrations, and bugs to hold. It was a fun and interactive experience for kids of all ages.

The Austin College Posey Leadership Award was presented to Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa (Dr. Q) for his work and the impact he has had on the lives of others. Dr. Q was born in Mexico, immigrated to the U.S., worked his way through school, and is now the head of Neuroscience at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. As a part of this award, Dr. Q had virtual sessions where students could have conversations with him and ask questions. He also visited campus on April 13 and 14 for a Welcome Gala and Convocation.

Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa (Dr. Q) was this year’s recipient of the Austin College Posey Leadership Award. The Posey Leader-in-Residence Series included virtual student sessions throughout the year, alongside an in person welcome gala and convocation. Everyone had a great time interacting with Dr. Q during his time on campus and he definitely left his mark on Austin College.

Three Austin College music students competed, virtually, in the 2022 Spring Student Auditions for the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter of National Association of Teachers of Singing. Each of the three vocalists earned awards at the competition. Brian Linares ’22 won first place in the Upper TTB Division, Jake Hanes ’22 placed third in the same division, and Lily Boessen ’23 placed third in Upper Treble Division.

Each year, Austin College hosts the Will Mann Richardson Lectureships and Seminars. This event was established to bring outstanding individuals to campus to discuss pertinent issues in economics, philosophy, law, and government. This year’s lecture on April 26 featured Dr. Richard V. Reeves. Dr. Reeves is from the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. and is giving a lecture titled “Are Boys and Men on the Ropes? Masculinity, Feminism, and Equality Today.”

On Tuesday, April 12, Austin College’s Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program will host a lecture featuring speaker Dr. Edward Harpham. Dr. Harpham is a political science professor and director of the Honors Program at the University of Texas at Dallas. His speech will be about “Political Economy, The Moral Sentiments, and The Question of Slavery in Adam Smith.”

According to a new report on a survey by the Lumina Foundation and Gallup about why students quit college during COVID, students cited emotional stress, health concerns, and financial worries as some of the biggest barriers to staying in college during the pandemic. For the students who ended up withdrawing during the pandemic, eighty-five percent said they were considering returning to the classroom.
