Austin College Honors Convocation was held on April 20. During the convocation, over 100 endowed scholarships were awarded to Austin College students and high achieving faculty members were recognized. The 2023 Homer P. Rainey Award for outstanding service went to Dr. Ricky Duhaime, and Kim Snipes (posthumously). The College’s nominee for the Piper Professor state-wide award is Dr. Ashley Tharayil, associate professor of economics, and the Excellence in Teaching and Leadership Award recipient is Dr. Andrea Overbay, associate professor of mathematics.

The event, run by Thinking Green and the Austin College Service Station, celebrates Earth Day with a morning of community service projects that have an environmental impact.  GreenServe has accrued over 3,500 service hours since its start in 2010.

In her award acceptance speech, Acevedo shared her life story of overcoming obstacles and rising to the highest ranks of major tech companies, and her shift into non-profit work led by her desire to build a bridge for future generations. "She emphasizes servant leadership, serving others and not being afraid of the unknown, adventuring into something unexpected, taking risks, and getting out of your comfort zones," said student Nick Estes ’24.

Austin College student Clemon White ’24 invited two of Durham’s descendants, Judge Maryellen Hicks of Tarrant County and Councilwoman Kathleen Hicks of Fort Worth, to Austin College to talk about his legacy.

AC students have signed up to maintain trails at Eisenhower State Park, garden at local schools, and assist with the Texoma Earth Day Festival, in addition to other environmentally focused projects in the community.

The team showcased the routine they used when they competed in Daytona, Florida at a National Cheer Competition. The showoff featured a raffle in which the winner could buzz the hair of one of the cheer team members.

On April 17, two instrumental ensembles presented their annual Spring Concert under the direction of Dr. Ricky Duhaime in Clifford J. Grum Sanctuary of Wynne Chapel. The first half of the concert featured the Chamber Orchestra, which is comprised of Austin College students, community members, and Austin College faculty member Cathy Richardson. The second half of the concert featured The Greater Texoma Jazz Ensemble, comprised of students, faculty, and community members across Northeastern Texas and Southeastern Oklahoma.
