Reed has extensive experience in the industry, including stints as executive vice president global operations of NXP Semiconductors N.V., and vice president and general manager at Global Foundries. He began his career at Texas Instruments, where he served for 26 years in a variety of leadership roles throughout the world.

Alfonso Charles ’87 has been reappointed as Presiding Judge of the Tenth Administrative Judicial Region by Governor Greg Abbott. Charles has been Judge of the 124th Judicial District Court in Gregg County, served on the Texas Judicial Council, and is an active member of various organizations, such as Rotary Club.

Austin College has announced that Kevin Gregory will be the new head coach for the women’s soccer team. Prior to working at Austin College, Gregory served as head coach at Bluffton University and assistant coach at Hendrix College. Gregory is extremely excited about this move and is ready “to help his athletes be the best they can be both on and off the field."

Liberty Chanin ’23 won gold and established a new swim program record at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in the 1,650-freestyle competition. She also became the first to win an individual conference title since Lauren Wheeler did so in 2015, and to earn All-SCAC honors since Marjory Gibson in 2007. Chanin’s record time was 17:42:90.

The recipient of the 2007 Austin College Leadership Award, Dr. Paul Farmer, died on February 21, 2022. Dr. Farmer dedicated his life to healthcare as a professor, physician, and was the founding director of Partners In Health.

The Fulbright National Screening Committee has selected four Austin College students as Fulbright semifinalists. The students are Marissa Graff ’22, Sarah Harper ’22, Katie King ’22, and Trevor Slansky ’22. These students have been extremely successful while at Austin College and are excited about the possibility of expanding their skills through a teaching assistantship abroad.

Austin College associate professor of biochemistry Dr. Jim Hebda gave a lecture called “Reprogrammed in Three Languages: Renewing Teaching, Research, and Perspective During a Pandemic” on Wednesday, February 16. During this event, Dr. Hebda discussed how COVID affected his sabbatical plans and what he learned. This lecture was a part of the Bernice S. Melvin Sabbatical Series.

Several other class representatives were also inducted. This team of people is excited to listen to the concerns of their fellow students and work to meet the needs of the student body.

Austin College received one of 27 Texoma Health Foundation grants for 2022. The Austin College grant is to support students participating in the 2022 Social Entrepreneurship for Poverty Alleviation (SEPA) grant writing training program. Other grant recipients include the Boys and Girls Club of Sherman, CASA of Grayson County, Texoma Community Center, and many others.

However, a new study published in the Journal of Information Science of COVID-19–era publication patterns by gender contradicts earlier research on the topic, suggesting that women haven’t published less than they did prior to the pandemic, over all.
