The Raven Theatre in Chicago has renamed its 85-seat East Stage "The Johnson Stage," in honor of longtime Board Member and supporter Stephen Johnson ’71. Thanks in part to a generous gift from Johnson, the theatre has been revitalized with new seating and other improvements.  Johnson joined Raven's Board of Directors in 2014 and served as the Treasurer until he assumed his current position of President in 2021.

Vedanta Group announced the appointment of David Reed ’81 as the Chief Executive Officer of its semiconductor business. He will be responsible for setting up a state-of-the-art semiconductor fab unit and semiconductor assembling and testing unit. A 35-year veteran in the semiconductor industry, David’s extensive international experience spans several geographies such as Germany, Japan, Singapore, the U.S., and other places.

SCAC Sports | February 12, 2023
Sammi Thiele ’23 was named the 2023 SCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Elite 19 award winner. Sammi is the first female Austin College swimmer to earn the SCAC Elite 19 award, and the fifth AC student-athlete in any sport to receive the honor. At the recent conference championship, she earned all-SCAC honors in three individual events, including the 100 backstroke, in which she broke the conference record.

University of Central Florida | February 21, 2023
John Hitt ’62, University of Central Florida’s fourth president and former Austin College offensive tackle, passed February 20, 2023, at the age of 82. Born in Houston, Hitt met his loving wife Martha during his time at Austin College. Before his passing, Hitt said, “Without college, I would not have met Martha, my wonderful wife and partner.” The couple had two children and two grandsons.  Hitt received the Austin College Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997.

After retiring from a long career in technology that included entrepreneurship, web development, application programing and data analysis, Hopkins decided to pursue ordination and has earned a Master of Divinity at Luther Seminary, launching her new career in the ministry.

Kailey Vick of Tom Beam has signed to continue her athletic career with Austin College volleyball. On why she chose AC, Vick said, “I really clicked with all of the girls… I loved the environment.” Head coach Ed Garza, Vick’s former club coach, guided the ’Roos to the NCAA Division III national tournament five times.

Two Austin College seniors have been selected as Fulbright Semi-Finalists for the 2023-2024 academic year. Seniors Natalia Nevarez and Addison Norman have been recommended to the National Screening Committee for the prestigious award from the Fulbright Program. The final selections will be announced later this spring after review by the supervising agency in the host countries.

Austin College officials have announced the Dean’s List for Fall Term 2022. The Dean’s List recognizes the top 20 percent of students taking a minimum of three graded, full-credit courses. For Fall Term 2022, 227 individuals are recognized.

Colonel Anita M. Kimbrough ’89 appears on The Mother Love Show.  Col. Kimbrough is a decorated soldier and a Doctor of Dental Surgery.  A U.S. Army dentist, she is the first African American female to command the DENTAC, the Dental Health Activity, in Fort Polk, Louisiana.

The event honoring longtime Austin College faculty member, Dr. Kenneth W. Street, will include four panel discussions and a following reception.

Austin College music faculty Cathy Richardson and Dr. Ricky Duhaime, along with colleagues Barbara Case and Lorna Case will be presenting two nights of A Recital of Two Melodic Masters: Franz Schubert and Gian Carlo Menotti. With the first performance on  February 11 and the second on February 19, the hope is to demonstrate the “melodic language and expressive philosophy” shared by the two composers.

On February 25, the Austin College music department presents A Recital for Cello and Piano, featuring Leslie Whelan, SSO Education Director for the Sherman Symphony Orchestra, on cello, and music faculty John McGinn on the piano. The recital will include selections from Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, and Williams.
