Professor of Psychology Dr. Lisa Brown, a Harvard alumna, commented on the Supreme Court’s decision to eliminate affirmative action from the college admissions process, stating that Harvard should reexamine their legacy admissions practice in light of the changes.

Goalball | July 2023 
Coach Randy Waldrum will lead the Nigeria Super Falcons in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign. Coach Waldrum began his coaching career in 1982 coaching the Austin College Men’s Soccer Team. Waldrum is also head coach for the University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team.

Will Heron ’11 is the artist liaison and a participating artist for the new Grapevine location of the immersive art experience Meow Wolf. This exhibition displays a surreal, interactive setting that mixes nostalgia with thought-provoking visuals. Heron explains that the mural he created in conjunction with the project is in support of the LGBTQ+ community in Texas.

Reverend H. Sharon Howell ’70 has been elected to the Kansas Wesleyan University Board of Trustees. Howell has previously served as a United Methodist clergy member and former president of the Saint Paul School of Theology.

Whitney Dove ’06, Ph.D., has been named CEO of Ellipsis Education, a computer science curriculum provider. Dove, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Austin College, was most recently a Vice President of Product at Ellipsis.

Sam Peterson ’91, Chief Operating Officer at Bitcentral, joins the conversation on the future of premiere news as executives look to the cloud. Peterson earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications at Austin College.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill | July 10, 2023 
Austin College was a cosponsor for an archaeological dig in Galilee that uncovered mosaics of Samson and commemorative inscriptions. Dr. Martin Wells, Associate Professor of Classics, and Miranda Brown ’24 traveled to Israel to participate in the dig this summer.

The Item - Huntsville | July 24, 2023 
The Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library has opened the Steamboat House to the public after a special ceremony in the rotunda of the museum. This Steamboat House was built as a home for Dr. Rufus Bailey, an early language professor at Austin College, and was relocated to the museum grounds in 1936 as part of the Texas Centennial Celebration.

The Austin College volleyball team was recognized by the United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association as one of of 1,333 collegiate and high school volleyball teams earning the Team Academic Award this season. The USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of at least 3.3.

Tate Nelson ’23 is one of the six finalists for the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Man of the Year. The award recognizes the conference’s senior male student-athlete who has best distinguished himself throughout his collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence and service and leadership.

Emma Samaniego ’25 is working a summer internship with the Social Entrepreneurship for Poverty Alleviation (SEPA) program at the Salvation Army of Grayson County, working to acquire more grant funding for the Salvation Army’s food pantry. Samaniego is one of 13 Austin College students participating in the SEPA program this summer writing grants for local nonprofits.

The Austin College baseball team has been awarded with the 2022-23 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award by the American Baseball Coaches Association. The 'Roos were one of two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schools represented.

Dr. Martin Wells, Associate Professor of Classics, has returned from the final excavations in a 1,600-year-old synagogue at Huqoq, an ancient Jewish village in Israel’s Lower Galilee. Miranda Brown ’24 participated in the archeological dig, where they uncovered ancient biblical mosaics.

Austin College hosted the Summer Kangaroo ID Volleyball Camp on July 14th and 15th. Local high school and club level volleyball athletes who attended the camp were able to expand their technical and tactical training for the game.
