At the awards, it was announced that “the work he has done for his students and in his field have been outstanding and set him apart from the rest. Booker is extremely deserving and will be invited to present at the 2023 ASBMB meeting to speak on his work.

Booker '87, Evan Pugh Professor of Chemistry and of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, at Penn State and investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute has been awarded the ASBMB-Merck Award and the Ruth Kirschstein Diversity in Science Award from the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). This marks the first time ASBMB has awarded two major awards to the same individual in the same year.

Emma Cook ’23 spent her summer as a counselor for a very special kind of camp: each summer, the University of Texas at Dallas provides a weeklong, unconventional environment for children with cochlear implants. This camp is meant to help children with hearing disabilities to build upon their speech/language skills in a comfortable environment with other kids experiencing the same thing. Emma was one of those campers and now, she and a few of her friends have returned to camp as counselors.

Pernell Jones has been named as Vice President for Business Affairs at Austin College. Jones has extensive experience in higher education having worked as Vice President of Administration, Chief Financial Officer, and President of Business Services at various universities. Jones also is not new to the Sherman area. He and his wife lived here years ago when he worked at Grayson College, and she worked briefly at Austin College. Both Jones and his wife are excited to rejoin the Austin College community.

Natalie McCoy ’22 has been named one of seven finalists for the 2021-2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Woman of the Year Award. The award recognizes the conference’s senior female student-athlete who has best distinguished herself throughout her collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, and service and leadership. McCoy graduated with majors in Business Administration and Business Finance and was a four-time SCAC Academic Honor Roll member. At AC, she also was a Posey Leadership Fellow, as well as a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.

Xander Spurlock ’22 has been named one of five finalists for the 2021-2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Man of the Year Award. He majored in Economics with a minor in Exercise and Sports Science and was a four-time member of the SCAC Academic Honor Roll. He was a two-time All-SCAC performer and was twice named CoSIDA Academic All-District in addition to being named to the Austin College Dean’s List each semester during his time in Sherman. Spurlock was a member of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society and the Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society.

Students participated in the day of service before their first day of classes on Tuesday, preparing several thousand meals for Kids Against Hunger. The event, in the Sid Richardson Gym, gives freshmen their first taste of the culture at Austin College of giving back.

The program invites 65 Grayson County elementary students to come together and investigate issues involved with the development of a city.
