Americas Society Council of the Americas | June 7, 2023 
Paul Shaw is set to perform the opening act at the Americas Society program with a classical piano piece by American composer Aaron Copland and also variations on a theme by the Bahamian composer E. Clement Bethel. Paul was an artist in residence at Austin College after achieving a bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate degrees from Juilliard.

Sharon Beth Larson ’01, D.O., M.S., is making waves at the top of her field as a cardiothoracic surgeon. She was awarded the Richard C. Lillehei and Earl Bakken Prize by the Lillehei Surgical Society in 2015 and is a high achiever in the realm of practicing cardiothoracic surgeons, where currently only eight percent are women.

The Tyler Museum of Art hosts a free screening of a documentary that examines the life and art of the late Fort Worth-based artist Vernon Fisher. Fisher, who taught at Austin College from 1969 until 1978, was an award-winning and nationally renowned artist.

Phoebe Angaye ’20 has been accepted into The Blacks Creatives Mentorship Program which introduces aspiring Black authors to the ins-and-outs of the publishing industry. She has been published in multiple literary journals and won competitions for her work.

Mandy Eckhardt ’21 recently completed qualifying exams at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. Mandy’s thesis research combines genetics and neuroscience, aiming to identify and characterize genes important in brain development.

Bryan ISD announces Dylan Laventure ’23 as the next Head Swim Coach of Bryan High School. He played collegiate water polo at Austin College while earning his degree in Business Administration with minor concentrations in Kinesiology and Communications. Recently, Laventure has spent the last two years as Head Coach for the Houston-based Viper Pigeon Water Polo Club.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University President Dr. Thomas W. Newsom ’91 has announced the hiring of Josh Manck ’05 as the university’s Executive Director of Communications. Manck brings nearly 20 years of broad-based communications experience and will lead Southeastern’s office of marketing and communications.

Koehler High ’27, recent graduate of Bells High School, officially signed with Austin College to play baseball as he continues his education at Austin College. He will be reuniting with his brother Keaton High ’26, who also plays baseball for the ’Roos.

Dr. Brett Boessen, Associate Professor of Media Studies and Communication, spent the last week of June in Lexington, Kentucky, at Transylvania University’s inaugural Digital Liberal Arts Summer Institute to foster national dialogue about the role of the liberal arts in the digital age. He has been working or teaching in media fields for two decades, and currently serves as chair of Austin College’s Media & Theatre department.

Austin College has announced the Dean’s List for Spring Term 2023. The Dean’s List recognizes the top 20 percent of students based on grade point average, taking a minimum of three graded, full-credit courses. For Spring Term 2023, 225 individuals are recognized.
