The Rising Eyes of Texas, a juried exhibition now celebrating its 15th year at Rockport Center for the Arts, features the work of 31 artists from 17 universities and colleges across Texas. Rebecca Tobias ’23 had a pair of photographs accepted into the exhibition and was also highlighted in the Curator’s Statement in the Exhibition Catalog.

Tyler James ’22 was honored by the National Football Foundation (NFF) Gridiron Club of Dallas Chapter as one of six recipients of its 2022 Collegiate Scholar-Athlete award. Candidates were selected based on their athletic accomplishments, academic performance, and leadership in the community. The NFF Gridiron Club of Dallas is one of 120 nationwide chapters of the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame.

Sarah Putnicki ’25, Natalie McCoy ’22, and Kacie West ’22 each received All-SCAC honors for the 2021-2022 basketball season. Sarah was named to the All-Freshmen team and was a second team All-SCAC pick. Natalie was a third team All-SCAC selection while Kacie received honorable mention honors. For the men’s team, Tristan Dick ’xx and Jason Jones ’xx each received honorable mentions for the All-SCAC.

Jacob Hanes ’22 presented his senior recital on March 25 in Wynne Chapel, performing music by Strauss, Donizetti, Massenet, Spohr, Lully, and Bellini.This recital is a requirement for completion of his music major. At the end of this semester, Hanes will graduate from Austin College with majors in music, economics, and business administration. After graduation, Hanes plans to earn his master’s degree and continue his music career.

Austin College will host Reverend Dr. Maria Dixon Hall to present “Beyond Babble: The Importance of Cultural Intelligence” for the 2022 Cunningham Lecture. Dr. Dixon Hall is the Chief Diversity Officer and Senior Advisor to the President for Campus Cultural Intelligence Initiatives at Southern Methodist University and has been highly regarded for her work.

Dr. Hunt Tooley, professor of history at Austin College, presents his five-week series titled “Six Events of World War I that Changed the World” for Sherman’s First United Bank and its Wind Down Wednesday lecture series. Beginning on March 30, the series is a set of case studies of events and episodes of World War I that shaped the modern world in real, tangible ways. Tooley has spent many years studying this war and written many pieces on the subject.

Andres Hernandez ’22 performed his senior recital on April 3 in Craig Hall’s Recital Hall. Hernandez has been playing the violin since the first grade and has worked hard to hone his skills. Hernandez performed a number of well-known pieces, including works by Beethoven and Shostakovich. Majoring in music and biology, Hernandez hopes to become a physician while continuing his music career in some way.

Austin College celebrated the life of Madeline Albright, who died on March 23. The Former Secretary of State was Austin College’s Chair of Excellence in International Leadership in 2002.

The Austin College Theatre Department presented Melanie Marnich’s These Shining Lives March 24 - 26 in Beardsley Arena Theatre. The show was directed by Olivia Trusty ’22 and brought to life by Chloe Bachofen ’22, Rhys McComack-Morris ’22, Theresa Pohl ’23, Allie Straeck ’22, Kennedy Shumate ’25, William Bridgewater ’23. The play is based on the true story of the Radial Dial Company and how the women’s work led to their death, but also changed the world for women.

Austin College hosted the 2022 Student Scholarship Conference on March 24 - 26. Each day was filled with poster presentations, speakers, theatre performances, and more. The ACSC provides a forum for students to share discoveries and creative expression in their respective areas of study.

Seven Austin College students presented at the 2022 Texas Academy of Science, and four took home prizes. Jessica Hoffman ’22 received first place for oral presentation in cell and molecular biology, and Sydney Versen ’23 placed third in that category. Electra Coffman ’22 received third place for a poster presentation in cell and molecular biology, while Keegan Nichols ’22 took home second place for poster presentation in conservation ecology. Yasmine Bukhari ’22, Miranda Glavan ’24, and Brigid Fox ’22 also presented at the event.

The Center for Southwestern and Mexican Studies at Austin College hosted Dr. Leticia Guerrero Pérez on March 8. Dr. Guerrero Pérez is a professor at a medical school in Mexico where she focuses on social gerontology, rehabilitation, and education. She has also run a medical practice for over 20 years in Mexico. During her visit to campus, Dr. Guerrero Pérez presented a lecture called “A Comparative Overview of Disability in Older Adults in Mexico and the U.S.”

Austin College senior Jacob Moreno ’22 was highlighted in this month’s senior spotlight. Jacob is a communication major with a minor in leadership studies. On campus, Jacob is involved in several organizations. He is an Institutional Marketing and Communication intern, the president of Campus Activities Board, a fellow of the Posey Leadership Institute, a little brother of Omega Zeta sorority, and is involved with the new student organization C.H.A.M.P.S. Jacob enjoys being involved on campus and working to make it better.

The latest Student Voice survey from Inside Higher Ed and College Pulse, sponsored by Kaplan, sought perspective from both students whose college search and enrollment were impacted by the pandemic and those who were already in college by spring 2020. Students in each group tended to have made decisions based on practical matters such as location, academic offerings, price and flexibility in the admissions process.

President Biden proposed a $2,175 increase in the maximum Pell Grant in his budget proposal to Congress for fiscal 2023. That would bring the maximum annual Pell award to $8,670. Though there is no guarantee the president will get what he’s asking for, the Pell increase is expected to be popular.
