O’Day announces the 2023 Austin College Posey Leadership Award recipient is Sylvia Acevedo, a former NASA engineer, an executive with tech giants, and an advocate for educational equality. She will receive her award after her presentation to students, faculty, and community guests on April 13 at 11 a.m. in the Clifford J. Grum Sanctuary of Wynne Chapel at Austin College. The event is open to the public at no charge.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, Austin Teacher Program celebrates their 50th anniversary - five decades of delivering the innovative Master of Arts in Teaching curriculum to prepare outstanding teachers for the classroom. The Austin Teacher Program began in 1972 under the direction of Dr. Virginia Love and Dr. Richard Freeman. Since then, 1,122 degrees have been awarded and more than 20 full-time faculty members have shared their expertise to train these students.

The Austin College 2022 Public Administration Symposium is scheduled for November 3. Sherman Economic Development Corporation president Kent Sharp, Denison Development Alliance president Tony Kaai, and Anna Economic Development Corporation president Joey Grisham begin the symposium with a panel discussion. A second panel includes Traci Leach ’97, Coppell’s Deputy City Manager, and Matt Yager ’03 from the City of Plano. David Morgan ’96, city manager of Georgetown, Texas, will deliver the keynote address.

Lifelong Sherman resident Dr. Clyde Hall celebrated his 100th birthday on October 15. He was born on South Travis street in 1922, and still recalls his earliest visits to the Austin College campus with his father in the 1920s as a young boy. Hall enrolled at the College in 1940, left to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII, then returned and graduated in 1946. Dr. Hall returned to AC once more as a professor in the Business Administration Department after earning an MBA and a Ph.D., and retired from AC in 1988 as professor emeritus.

A variety of modern folk music was performed by the Austin College Wind Symphony on October 5 in Wynne Chapel. Symphony members consisted of not only AC students, but also members of the local community who play purely for their love of music. The event was directed by Alan Harkey and was open to the public.

The Boyer 2030 Commission of the Association for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities report has been released, and it placed a key focus on equity in education. The report covers “not only the kinds of education students should receive, but approaches to effective teaching, advising, faculty-reward systems, curricular structure, credit transfer, technology, and mental health. Throughout the narrative, the authors point out ways in which traditional approaches to those dimensions of college favor students who come from better-resourced backgrounds, and why that must change.”

Two new studies on gender bias in student evaluations of teaching look at the phenomenon from fresh angles. One study found that female instructors faced more backlash for grades given than did male instructors. The other study examined how ageism relates to gender bias in student ratings, finding that older female instructors were rated lower than younger women.
