These pulses are incredibly short and have enabled scientists to investigate the real-time breaking of chemical bonds and understand electron behavior in various contexts, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of the fundamental particles that make up matter.

Dr. Sebastián Páramo, Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Austin College, debuted his semi-autobiographical poetry collection entitled, Portrait of Us Burning. The book has been selected by the elite Texas Book Festival, which begins November 11 in Austin, Texas. This article is available only in the printed edition.

Reverend Mike O'Neil ’89 was installed as the new pastor for United Presbyterian Church in Greenville, Texas. O’Neil relocated to this area after serving as pastor for First Presbyterian Church in Wheeling, West Virginia. He graduated from Austin College and Columbia Theological Seminary, before earning his Master of Arts from Regent College.

Niki Prindle ’93 was announced as the new principal of Elementary School 30, located in Leander, Texas. Prindle graduated from Austin College with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts, with a concentration on psychology.

Dorthy Vakidas ’07 is part of the team at Prince of Peace School in Plano, Texas, that has been honored with their third national Blue Ribbon award. The school's success is attributed to its STEM lab and collaborative teaching approach, providing students with engaging and hands-on learning experiences.

Rick Lowe, Houston-based artist and activist, best known as the founder of Project Row Houses, has been named as the 2024 Austin College Posey Leadership Award recipient. As the Posey Leader-In-Residence, Lowe will offer four sessions for students throughout the year touching on different aspects of his work, leading up to the award presentation and convocation in April 2024.

Austin College President Steven O’Day has announced the newest construction project on college property aimed to assist new employees who are moving to the area. A row of seven single-family homes will be constructed along Grand Avenue and designated as transitional housing for new Austin College employees in their first few years as they join the community and learn the area.

Clemon White ’24 presented to the Grayson County Bar Association on the history of William J. Durham, a Black attorney who lived in Sherman in the 1930s and worked to secure an array of civil rights for African-Americans. White detailed how Durham’s work to desegregate the UT Austin Law School set a precedent that would later be used in Brown vs. Board of Education.

Austin College is constructing seven modern homes to serve as transitional housing for new employees, addressing the challenge of affordable housing for staff near campus. The homes are expected to be available for rent by new employees, aiming to facilitate their integration into the community and support the revitalization of the east Sherman neighborhood, with completion anticipated by August 2024.

Dr. David Whelan, Associate Professor of Physics at Austin College, explained what a solar eclipse is and why the sighting of one had so many in the Americas captivated as the moon blocked the majority of the sun’s light. Dr. Whelan also warned of the dangers of looking directly into an eclipse.

Austin College was named as a 2023 Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution Leaders by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. One of only forty-six colleges across the nation receiving the honor, Austin College was recognized for the college’s support for Fulbright exchange participants globally and for promoting Fulbright program opportunities on campus.

Austin College will host an exhibition showcasing the work of alumni who work in Art Educations. The Alumni Art Educators Exhibit will be on display through December 8 in the Dennis Gallery of the Forster Art Studio Complex, open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4: p.m.

Geoff '08 and Jessica '09 Wescott spoke at a 2023 panel discussion at Austin College, emphasizing the importance of leadership and how the college prepares students to "manage up." They discussed the value of understanding those who lead you and fostering open conversations with professors to develop leadership skills. Geoff founded Brockett Street Capital, while Jessica serves as the CFO and COO of Stellar Service Brands.

Austin College will host a reception celebrating 19 alumni artists who currently work in the field of Art Education on Saturday November 4, as part of its Homecoming festivities. The exhibit will run from October 30 through December 8 in the Dennis Forster Art Studio Gallery.

The Raising Innovative Sherman Entrepreneurs (RISE) Challenge program, a collaborative effort by Sherman Economic Development Corporation, Austin College, Grayson Small Business Development Center, and other partners, has opened applications for its 2024 round. The program will award a total of $250,000 in cash grants to manufacturing-related businesses, which must either operate or relocate within the city limits of Sherman, with the winners set to be announced in March 2024.

Dr. John McGinn, Associate Professor of Music at Austin College will host internationally recognized baritone Jeremy Huw Williams for a Master Class on October 17. In addition to performing “Between Sunsets” by Hilary Tann and “My Last Duchess” by Grace Williams, Williams and McGinn performed a revised version of McGinn’s song, “Fire and Straw.”

Mary Randers, current Dean of Admission at Austin College, was named Interim Vice President of Institutional Enrollment after her predecessor, Baylee Kowert ’05 announced plans to relocate to Australia. Kowert has worked at Austin College for 18 years and has held the position of Vice President of Institutional Enrollment since 2019.

The Austin College Board of Trustees recently approved a new housing project on Grand Avenue. The seven housing units will serve as transitional housing for new employees of the college. Construction should be completed by August 2024.
