David Norman ’83, Director of Athletics and Chair of the Kinesiology Department, and Margie Norman ’83, Director of Career Services, announced their retirement from Austin College at the end of the 2024-25 academic year. The Normans have a combined total of over 70 years of service to the College, and will be greatly missed.

Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, Chief Scientist for The Nature Conservancy and a Horn Distinguished Professor and Endowed Professor of Public Policy and Public Law at Texas Tech University, has been announced as the 2025 Posey Leader-in-Residence at Austin College. Hayhoe will offer four sessions for students throughout the year, touching on different aspects of her work leading up to the award convocation in April.

Although it will be a difficult goodbye, President O’Day and the College will be wishing the Normans a fond farewell for a much-deserved retirement after their decades of service to the College.

Austin College has named atmospheric scientist Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, the 2025 Posey Leader-in-Residence for her research on what climate change means for people and the places where we live. Formally launched in 2005 and made possible through the generosity of Sally and Lee Posey of Dallas, the Austin College Posey Leadership Award honors an outstanding individual who has demonstrated the principles of servant leadership by taking a courageous stand on a public policy issue that advances a humanitarian or educational purpose; or serving the youth of a state, nation, or international community to improve the quality of health, educational, or community services; or by creating opportunities for young people that help them enhance their educational experience and move to a new level of service to society.

The Sherman Symphony Orchestra (SSO) performed on October 26, 2024, at Kidd-Key Auditorium in Sherman, Texas, featuring works by Jean Sibelius, Maurice Ravel, and William Grant Still. The SSO was founded in 1966 by Austin College Professor of Music, Cecil Isaac, and performs several concerts throughout the year including the annual Christmas Pops show in December.

Austin College President Steven O’Day has announced the retirement of David Norman, Director of Athletics and Chair of the Kinesiology Department, at the end of the 2024-25 academic year. Norman has been with the College for over 35 years and is a cornerstone of the College’s athletic program. O’Day stated that the college plans to conduct a national search to fill Norman’s seat.

The Texoma Semiconductor Tech Hub (TSTH) Consortium has been awarded $500,000 through the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to continue implementing its strategy focused on increasing semiconductor production in the Texoma region. Austin College’s strong connections to the North Texas region, combined with their location in the epicenter of the semiconductor hub, allows the College to collaborate with The TSTH in many ways—acting as a gateway for collaboration and networking in their region and across the border into southern Oklahoma.
