The Search for the 17th President of Austin College

In February 2025, Austin College Board of Trustees Chair Scott Austin and President Steven P. O’Day announced O’Day’s plans to retire from the institution in summer 2026 and subsequently launched the College’s search for his successor. In December 2025, Dr. Rebecca Cantor was named as the 17th President.

The Presidential Search Committee was led by Chairman Austin with the support of Trustees Kiki McLean ’85 and Joe Sanders ’00 serving as co-chairs, and including representatives of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and the student body. The Committee began the rigorous search process in spring 2025, and in November, the Board of Trustees received their recommendation and voted to approve the selection of Dr. Cantor.

President O’Day will remain at the helm of the institution until his retirement at the end of June 2026.

Introducing Dr. Rebecca Cantor

The Board of Trustees has selected Rebecca Cantor, Ph.D., to become the 17th President of Austin College on July 1, 2026. She is currently serving as the Provost and Chief Academic Officer for Spring Hill College, a similarly sized, mission-driven institution in Mobile, Alabama. As Provost, Dr. Cantor’s leadership portfolio is broad, overseeing academics, the library, career and advising services, international studies, and several other areas. She has also provided leadership for student affairs, campus safety, admissions, and athletics.

Dr. Cantor is a skilled fundraiser and leader in strategic planning. She has played a pivotal role in developing a new $35 million Health and Science Innovation Center, supported the successful Faith in the Future Campaign, and directed a $2.2 million Title III grant focused on student success resources. She has spearheaded the execution of several strategic and academic partnerships. Her focus on institutional effectiveness resulted in an 8% increase in first-year retention at Spring Hill College. She also administered the development and implementation of the 2024-2030 strategic plan.

A tenured Professor of English, Dr. Cantor’s entire career has been dedicated to liberal arts education. She previously served as the Chair of the Department of Liberal Arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design and held senior leadership roles including Assistant Provost and Writing Program Administrator at Azusa Pacific University. She views the liberal arts as essential for “educating the whole person and preparing students not merely for a specific career, but for a life of purpose, adaptability, and engaged citizenship in an increasingly complex world.” Liberal arts education, she says, “takes shape in the space between classes and concepts as much as it does in a student’s philosophy or physics or psychology classes, deepening the wells students will draw from in whatever situations—life or career or calling—they come to encounter.”

Dr. Cantor received her Ph.D. in English from Claremont Graduate University, her Master’s in English from Loyola Marymount University, and her B.A. in English with a minor in Religious Studies from Fairfield University, where she was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Her dissertation focuses on names and naming in Mark Twain’s literature, and she has published two books of poetry, Running Away and The Other Half: Poems on Women in the Bible. Having taught more than 70 English and writing courses, she is excited to be teaching a poetry class at Spring Hill in spring 2026. She will also hold the title of Professor of English at Austin College. An accomplished former NCAA Division I volleyball athlete, her 2000 team will be inducted into Fairfield University’s Hall of Fame this February. She enjoys puzzles, board games, home improvement, travel, and playing Minecraft with her children John (15) and Norah (13).

Letter from Dr. Cantor

Hello, everyone—

As President O’Day took me on a tour of the campus, in the rain no less, it was clear how much he cares for this institution, our students, our 176-year legacy, and our future. He has expertly guided the College through impressive endowment growth, and significant campus and academic program enhancements, all while fostering a deep sense of community. I am honored by the confidence of the Board of Trustees and the Search Committee in my ability to carry on President O’Day’s work by becoming the 17th President of Austin College.

How incredible to be invited to join this top 100 liberal arts institution! As a product of the liberal arts myself, I’m dedicated not only to preparing students for their first jobs, but to giving them an interdisciplinary foundation that is dependable throughout their careers even in a rapidly changing world. At Austin College, we will continue to champion this tradition, educating the whole person, and instilling the critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and communication skills necessary for a life of meaningful purpose.

I believe in the importance of shared governance and transparency. I will work with our dedicated faculty, staff, Board, and all stakeholders to foster a community where every member owns our collective success. I look forward to actively participating in the vibrant life of the institution—attending campus events, eating in the Caf, and cheering on ’Roos from the sidelines.

I am particularly energized to work alongside Austin College’s talented Senior Leadership Team. I have already had the pleasure of one-on-one conversations with each member, and I came away excited to embark on our next chapter with these impressive leaders who work so hard for our students.

Thank you for inviting me to lead this distinguished institution I have already come to love. I can’t wait to join you, Austin College!

See you soon,
Rebecca

17th President Announced

Presidential Search Announcement

SHERMAN, TEXAS – Austin College has announced the successful completion of the search for their 17th President. Chair of the Austin College Board of Trustees Scott Austin ’83 has announced that the College’s next President will be Dr. Rebecca Cantor.

Dr. Cantor is currently Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Spring Hill College, a private liberal arts institution in Mobile, Alabama, a role she has held since 2022. Prior experience includes positions as Assistant Provost and Writing Program Administrator at Azusa Pacific University and Chair of the Liberal Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design. As a tenured professor of English, she has taught over 70 courses and published two books of poetry.

As Provost at Spring Hill College, she has worked extensively on Emergency Management, Institutional Effectiveness, including SACSCOC accreditation efforts, and student success and persistence initiatives—for which she co-authored a successful Title III grant application for $2.2 million for a project focused on student retention. A tireless champion of liberal arts education, she is also a frequent speaker, contributor, and public voice in conversations about the unique value of the liberal arts.

In his announcement, Mr. Austin expressed his and the Board’s enthusiasm for Dr. Cantor. “We conducted a rigorous, nationwide search to find our next President. There were many outstanding candidates, but ultimately Dr. Cantor stood out above the rest. In addition to a breadth of experience in liberal arts higher education, Dr. Cantor will bring leadership that is based on collegiality, collaboration, and transparency, together with interminable energy and a deep desire for the College to succeed. We are confident that, under Dr. Cantor’s leadership, Austin College will continue the positive and upward momentum that we have experienced under the great leadership of President Steven O’Day. On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Austin College, we are excited about our future."

Dr. Cantor holds a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut, a Master’s degree in English from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California, and a Ph.D. in English from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California, where she wrote a dissertation on names and naming in Mark Twain’s literature. She will also hold the title of Professor of English at Austin College.

Dr. David Griffith, Professor of Business Administration and Economics, who was a faculty representative on the search committee, emphasized how well Cantor’s career and educational background has prepared her for the role. “Dr. Cantor’s liberal arts scholarship and executive experience make her the perfect fit for Austin College President. She has proven to be inspirational in times of opportunity and prepared and confident in a crisis. She will build on our existing strengths, unite us in common purpose, prepare us for the future, and make us even stronger than we are today,” he said.

President of Spring Hill College, Dr. Mary Van Brunt, echoed Griffith’s remarks about Cantor’s readiness for the role, and expressed her support for Cantor as she makes the transition to the Presidency. “Rebecca’s energy and enthusiasm provide a positive atmosphere on campus that will be missed. She has been a strong contributing member of the Senior Leadership team as Provost, eager to take on additional areas of responsibility, which will be beneficial in her role as President,” she said, adding, “I am thrilled for this wonderful opportunity for both Rebecca and Austin College.”

Austin College President Steven O’Day also voiced his support for Dr. Cantor, saying, “The upward trajectory and historic momentum of Austin College is such that this is the ideal time for a transition of leadership. I am excited for Rebecca to lead this extraordinary institution in its next chapter. I have no doubt that she is up to the task, and it is with complete confidence and peace of mind that I head into retirement knowing that she will step in and the College will not miss a beat.” President Steven O’Day will remain at the helm of the institution until his retirement at the end of June 2026, at which point Dr. Cantor will assume the role. She will remain active in her current role as Provost at Spring Hill College through May 2026, and join Austin College in July 2026, with a goal of holding an inauguration celebration that fall.
