Faculty: Sebastián Páramo
Description: What is Texas poetry and what does it mean to write about Texas? Do you have to be a Texan to write Texas poetry? We will explore these questions and cultivate our own voices as X-th generation Texans, transplants, and/or immigrants. We will read works by Gloria Anzaldúa, J. Scott Brownlee, Vanessa Angélica Villareal, Fady Joudah, and Vievee Francis. We will learn about themes and conversations that define how contemporary Texas poets engage with place and history. We will personally explore wilderness and urban areas as settings for poetry. You will also learn to cultivate your own voice through the art of attention. Would you like to experiment with audio and visual interpretations of poetry? Our final project will be to produce a zine/micro-chapbook of work with a critical introduction. Expect a Texas-sized writing and reading experience!
