Creativity and innovation of all sorts are called for at Austin College. Some of that was called for quite early this morning.
The backstory: Jeff Kubena and Magan Green graduated from Austin College together in 2017 and were married that July. Magan, who had been a resident assistant and head resident as a student, joined the Austin College Student Life staff as an area coordinator in August 2017 and completed her Master in Teaching degree that fall through the ATP. ’Roo Suites is part of her “territory” for Student Life so she and her husband, Jeff, make their home there. (Jeff works as a detention officer for Collin County Sheriff’s Office in McKinney, Texas.) Their dog lives with them. And, they have been preparing for the arrival of a baby.
Back to early this morning: Jeff left for work early—about 5:30—as he usually does. Magan didn’t feel well after he’d gone and called Lenora Hatch, director of Health Services at the College—plus her Student Life colleagues Sunita Nayani and Patrick Miller for some support. They each arrived between 6:05 and 6:15 a.m.—and somewhere around there, someone called the paramedics. Jeff was already on his way back from McKinney but barely made it to the apartment as paramedics arrived to transport Magan to the hospital; things were moving much too quickly for that, and the newest Austin College ’Roo, Rodney Cole, was born in the apartment. A few minutes later, mom, dad, and baby were headed for Wilson N. Jones Medical Center where all were pronounced healthy.
Innovation at its best!
No one recalls a baby born previously in a campus residence at Austin College, but Jeff and Magan are obviously trendsetters. While students, they were the first (at least in recent memory) back-to-back Austin College Homecoming king and queen, elected royalty in fall 2016 and 2017. What will they do next? Twins?? The campus community sends many well wishes, thankful that this day’s adventure had a quite adorable resolution.
