Description: This course will explore the rich, diverse, and innovative history of religion in eighteenth-century Europe. Topics will include religious toleration, science and natural theology, sentimentalism, religious “enthusiasm,” race and slavery, skepticism, new currents in biblical scholarship, and religious themes in art and music. We’ll also meet the Vicar of Bray and Kit Smart’s cat, and have a serious talk about card-playing on the sabbath.
